The Geological Service of Tajikistan is represented by the Main Department of Geology under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. It was established on June 28, 1938, by Order No. 275 of the Main Geological Directorate of the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry of the USSR, on the basis of field parties and detachments of the Tajik-Pamir Expedition and part of the Central Asian Geological Trust.
Geological studies of the territory of present-day Tajikistan began as early as the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The renowned Russian geologist I. V. Mushketov laid the foundation for systematic research of the region. For several decades, I. V. Mushketov’s classic works, Turkestan and Geological Map of the Turkestan Region, served as essential reference materials for geologists conducting research in Central Asia.
