Khatlon region (Farsi: ﻭﻻﯾﺖ ﺧﺘﻼﻥ ) is a region in the south of the Republic of Tajikistan. The center is the city of Bokhtar, located 100 km south of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, at the mouth of the Vakhsh River.Khatlon region was officially established on December 2, 1992 by the decision of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Tajikistan. Khatlon region with an area of 24,600 km2 is located in the Vakhsh Valley and occupies 17.2% of the territory of Tajikistan. The region borders in the north with the regions of republican subordination, in the east with the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, in the south with Afghanistan and in the West with Uzbekistan. According to the 2016 census, the population of Khatlon region is 3,047,800 people, which is 35.6% of the population of Tajikistan. Of these, 547.5 thousand people (18% of the total population of the region) were urban and 2500.3 thousand people (82.0%) were rural. The average population density of the region is 123.9 people per km2.[2] Catalans speak Tajik and Uzbek languages.
