Date of establishment: On March 10, 1931, Jirgatal district was transformed into a district. On March 3, 2016, Jirgatal District was renamed Lakhsh District. In terms of territory, Lakhsh District is one of the largest districts in the republic, covering an area of 4,580 km².
The administrative center of the district is located at an altitude of 1,795 meters above sea level and at a distance of 284 kilometers from the city of Dushanbe.
The district is surrounded by the Alay mountain range in the north and the Peter I mountain range in the south.
It borders the Alay District of the Kyrgyz Republic to the northeast, the Murghab District of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region to the southeast, Tavildara District to the south, Rasht District to the west, and Tajikobod District to the southwest.
